Felonies

What is a felony?

In Georgia, there are two types of criminal charge categories as it relates to severity and sentencing: misdemeanors and felonies.

Misdemeanors are the less serious crimes of the two categories and, in general, can only be punished by 12 months in jail and/or $1000 fine.  There is a subcategory in misdemeanors that is called high and aggravated that can carry a longer jail term and fine.  Read more about misdemeanors.

Felonies consist of the most severe offenses and are sentenced with a minimum of 1 year in prison.  A felony sentence can have a maximum depending on the offense.  Being convicted of a felony also has more consequences and you can lose more than a misdemeanor - the right to carry a firearm, vote, and run for office, job opportunities, school opportunities, and more.

Should I hire an attorney if I'm charged with a felony? Why Bray Law?

You should hire an attorney if you are charged with a felony.  You can be sentenced to years in the state prison sentence, fined thousands of dollars, and sentenced to years of probation after your prison term.  This could cost you not only your rights and make you a convicted felony, but could cost you thousands of dollars.  Just the cost of probation is a lot of money.  On top of everything, employers, lenders, and schools can learn you are a convicted felony.  And if it's a sex crime, you would be put on the sex offender registry for the rest of your life.
